THE HIGHWAYMEN is a world premiere theatrical production by playwright Josh Wilder which will open at History Theatre in St. Paul on February 4. THE HIGHWAYMEN examines the price of progress, the cost of convenience, and asks the all-important question: progress and convenience for whom?

For those driving between Boneshaker Books and History Theatre, it’s just a quick trip down Interstate 94. Ten minutes, maybe. Fifteen tops. Perhaps that ease of travel seems natural to you. For many of us, we’ve never known a Twin Cities without the interstate system cutting through its urban fabric. But I-94 is no natural phenomenon, and the decision to route it through St. Paul’s largest African-American community didn’t happen by chance.

1956. The construction of Interstate 94 destroyed the thriving, tight-knit Rondo neighborhood where homes, stores and businesses once stood. The new freeway tore through the heart of St. Paul’s largest African-American community. This powerful new drama explores the dynamics surrounding the decision-making process that shattered the lives of thousands of middle-class residents and changed the face of St. Paul forever.
