June Boneshaker Science Book Club: "Irresistible"

June 1, 2019 - 11:00am

The June Science Book Club selection is "Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked" by Adam Alter. Paperback editions of the books will be available soon from Boneshaker at 20% off list price. The book is also readily available from the Hennepin County Public Library, as well as on audiobook.

From the book's website: "Tracing addiction through history, Alter shows that we’re only just beginning to understand the epidemic of behavioral addiction gripping society. He takes us inside the human brain at the very moment we score points on a smartphone game, or see that someone has liked a photo we’ve posted on Instagram. But more than that, Alter heads the problem off at the pass, letting us know what we can do to step away from the screen. He lays out the options we have to address this problem before it truly consumes us. After all, who among us hasn't struggled to ignore the ding of a new email, the next episode in a TV series, or the desire to play a game just one more time?"

The book should provide some good jumping-off points for discussion.

The Boneshaker Science Book Club is free and open to the public. We meet the first Saturday of the month from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., unless we don't, so please check the calendar in case a fast one has been pulled. The books we read will be science-related, but hopefully accessible to those without an academic background in science. We seek to select titles that are in line with Boneshaker's mission of social justice.

Note from host: I'll bring coffee to share!
