Book Club - Our Way Or The Highway: Inside the Minnehaha Free State

June 25, 2016 - 11:00am

For the June book in the Spinning Stories Book Club, we're reading and discussing Our Way Or The Highway: Inside the Minnehaha Free State by Mary Losure. The protests and eventual construction depicted in this book happened less than 20 years ago and are of particular note at the present moment, as history (and the North-Bound extention highway 55) threatens to repeat itself through North Minneapolis.

"Construction plans for the reroute of Highway 55 through south Minneapolis sparked an environmental movement that pitted activists against public authorities in one of the most dramatic episodes in the city's history. Mary Losure was there; as a reporter for Minnesota Public Radio she witnessed the neighborhood's transformation from a quiet street to the center of an emotionally charged standoff. Fueled by idealism and anger, a diverse coalition banded together to try to stop the highway expansion. Beginning in 1998, this group sustained protests for more than one year and eventually faced an unprecedented show of force by law enforcement."

Copies of the book will be available at Boneshaker Books by late May at a 20% discount for book club readers.

The discussion will take place from 11am - 1pm. After the discussion, there will be an optional bike ride of approximately 5 miles down to the former Minnehaha Free State site, and to a restaurant nearby (open to suggestions!).
